He was retired from the Greeneville Police Department, U.S. Army, and the National Guard. He was also a retired Greene County school bus driver. He was an avid farmer and enjoyed riding and working his horses with his grandson. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was always thinking of others.
Gilbert was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, VFW Post #1990, Mosheim Masonic Lodge #463, Scottish Rite of Knoxville, Kerbela Temple of Knoxville, Eastern Star Mosheim Chapter #292, Greeneville Fraternal Order of Police, Racking Horse Breeders Association of Decatur, Alabama, Midway Volunteer Fire Department, and he was a past president of Midway Ruritan Club.
Survivors include his wife: Frances Knight Burger; daughter and son-in-law: Karon and Steven Stout of Midway, son: John Gregory Burger of Greeneville, special grandson: Tony Ricker II and spouse Cristy of Midway, special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Sunny Cutshall and spouse Robert, Christine Knight and spouse Ronnie; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Billy and Pat Knight, Curtis and Judy Knight, Gerald and Mary Knight, Ralph and Linda Knight, Concheata Knight, Jim and Kathy Knight, Glenna Blake, Charlotte and Bob Parman, Bruce and Frances Knight, Ruth Myers, Clyde Knight and Janice Brown; step grandchildren: Angie and Brian Hopson, Tracy Olson; step great grandchildren: Matthew Olson, Daniel Olson, Josh Olson, Kelsie White, and Tyler Hopson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the son of the late Grover and Pauline Smith Burger and was preceded in death by two brothers: Gordon and Larry Burger; and a sister: Gaynelle Burger.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home preceding the funeral service at 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Rev. Doug Jennings and Rev. Ronnie Knight will officiate with the eulogy given by Faye Shipley.
Interment will follow at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. It is requested that family and friends meet at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home to go in procession to the committal service. The Greene County Honor Guard will conduct a military graveside service.
His pallbearers will be Tony Ricker II, Judge Ronnie Greer, Lewis Shipley, Marty Renner, Glennwood Guinn, Brian Bragdon, and Robert Cutshall.
Larry Jones and the staff of Greene County Land and Auction and the members of Midway Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.
