Born in Benhams, Virginia to Jonathan and Kennedy Worley on November 20, 1923, he was raised in a family of eight boys. He joined the US Navy and served as an aerial photographer in World War II, mapping over Greenland, Central America, and South America. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1947 and soon thereafter, as a very young man, served as Mayor of Rural Retreat, Virginia. He began work for Pet Milk Company and served as Head Fieldman in Rural Retreat, Virginia; Greenboro, Maryland; and Dover, Delaware; advancing to District Fieldman where his territory covered the area from Dover, Delaware to Kosesko, Mississippi. While in Greeneville, he served as South East District Fieldman. He retired from Pet Milk Company after working there 41 years. After retiring, he started his own business of leasing dairy cattle which he enjoyed very much. At one time he had over 1000 cows leased out to area farmers in Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina.
Living in Greeneville, he served as a Greene County commissioner, and then later a Greeneville Alderman. He served on many boards, including the Greeneville Light and Power, Greeneville Library (as it was being built), Greeneville Chamber of Commerce, of which he served as Director, and the Greene County Agriculture Board. He was a member of the Lions Club for over 50 years, also serving as a president of the club, and faithfully attended meetings and participated in the activities until just a few months before his death. He served as President of the Tennessee Dairy Products of Tennessee and a judge for dairy cattle shows in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. He also was a member of Greeneville Lodge # 3 F &AM and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he had served on various committees over the years.
Charles was very interested in the political activities of the community. He was an avid golfer, and especially enjoyed playing golf with his many friends.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy Worley; three sons and their wives: Chuck and Kathy, Dennis and Ann, Jeff and Sonia; stepson, Jody Walker; stepdaughter, Rebecca Prenshaw and husband, Rick; 13 grandchildren, including: Charlie Worley, Carmen Reda, Samantha Worley, Alicia Opel, Jennifer Worley, Courtney Renner, Ashley Whitney, Josh Worley, Jacob Worley, Jordan Worley, Eric Prenshaw, John Prenshaw and David Prenshaw; 13 great grandchildren; and two brothers, Myrt and Paul (Jean) Worley.
He was preceded in death by his dad and mom; his first wife, Carmen Shipley Worley; and brothers: Jett, Sutton, R.E, Bill and Shelley Worley.
The family will receive friends 4-7 pm Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
The Greeneville Masonic Lodge # 3 F&AM will conduct a Masonic Service at 7pm Sunday in the Kiser-Rose Hill Chapel.
The funeral service will be 1 pm Monday in the funeral home chapel. Rev. Jerry Jones will officiate.
Interment will follow at Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. The Greene County Honor Guard and the US Navy Honors Team will conduct a military graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Jody Walker, Nat Renner, Jackson Renner, Bryant Renner, Eric Prenshaw, John Prenshaw, David Prenshaw and Tyrell Opel.
Honorary pallbearers will be member of the LaRue Class of Asbury UM Church, members of the Greeneville Lions Club, and Ted Lester.
