John graduated 32nd in the class of 1967 from Reelsville High School. Upon Graduation John went to work at Lone Star. During his 40-year career John spent time in the Quarry as a mechanic, welder, and repairman, among other duties. John Retired in 2007.
John had a passion for horses as a young boy. He won competitions on the back of a horse throughout his 10-year membership with 4H and beyond. Later in life John transitioned to mules. John spent decades training, racing, and working teams. John’s team was a fixture in the Putnam County Fair Parade, weddings, and funeral processions. John and his favorite mule, Ole Grey, held a record at the Indiana State Fair winning the Mule Race 10 years in a row, retiring unbeaten.
A second passion was poker. John’s “Poker Room” has been a favorite hangout for friends. Twice a week, over many years, John hosted friends to play cards and cheer on his beloved Hoosiers.
John was a tireless worker be it at work, cutting wood, or working his mules. John was a uniquely funny man with a distinctive laugh all his own.
John was proceeded in death by both parents, and brothers Jim and Tim. John is survived by wife Karen (Hutcheson); sisters Judy and Terri; daughters Kim “Goob” Scroggin, Krista “Crick” Sullivan (Chris). John enjoyed teasing his many nieces, nephews, and Grandchildren Jessica, Katie, Erika, Tanner, Kyndal, Michael; and 7 Great Grandchildren.
John was a Lifetime Member at Greencastle Moose Lodge where a celebration of life will be held for all friends and family on January 26, 2025, at 1:30pm.
