He was born November 17, 1935 in Indianapolis the son of William Arnold and Jeannette L. (Taber) Humston and was a graduate of Ben Davis High School.
Jim owned and operated a security door company for several years. He had previously served as an Indiana State Trooper, receiving his training from the State Police Academy at Indiana University, Bloomington.
The family spent many years on Cataract Lake boating and participated in various water sports throughout the years. Jim enjoyed being on the water and after retiring, he & wife, Mary lived on a 38’ Trawler, traveling the river system East of the Mississippi. He was a member of the Marine Trader Boating Assn.
He is survived by his wife, Mary M. (Simmons) Humston; children, Judy (Larry) Potter, James W. “Jimmy” (Kris) Humston, Joseph A. “Joe” Humston, Tabatha (Jamey) Perkins, and Shawna Butler; 13 grandchildren, Dustin, Jennifer, Danny, John, Michael, Kelly, Ashley, Katelyn, Patrick, Jimmy, Stephanie, Logan, and Lucy; and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steve Spencer; and a sister, Patricia Brown.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 5:00 PM on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until time of service and no graveside will follow.
