James Steven Akins

James Steven Akins, 68, of Greencastle, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born September 9, 1955 in Greencastle, the son of James A. Akins and Elinor (Irwin) Buis. He was a graduate of Greencastle High School “Class of 1973”. Steve was a veteran having served in the United States Air Force. He had retired from the Putnamville Correctional Facility. He was a member of the American Legion and Long Branch Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents. Steve is survived by his wife, Anita (Klebusch) Akins; son John (wife Kim) York; siblings Karen (husband Larry “Steve”) Sheldon, Ruth (husband Jon) Myers, Cheryl (husband Stephen) Robertson, Richard “Arlie” Mitchell ( Misti), and Tony (wife Melissa) Mitchell; grandchildren Mike (wife Katie) York, Matt (wife Serrina) York, Jaylen York, Jarrett York, Nick (wife Sarah) Long, & Emily Long (Dalton Beasley); five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 6, 2024 at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow at the Brick Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM on Friday until time of service at the funeral home.
