Mary Ellen Joy Reyes Hernandez, 80, of Nunn, died Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Fairacres Manor in Greeley. Mary was born on October 7, 1933 in Hollywood, California to Rafael Antonio and Esther (Galindo) Reyes.
Mary grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She spent her early adulthood in Boyaca and Bogota, Colombia. She married Alberto Bernabe Hernandez on May 30, 1953 in Bogota. He died on December 15, 1977.
Mary worked as an English teacher for many years. She also worked as a secretary in the US Embassy in Bogota. She volunteered at a psychiatric hospital and helped people in need.
Mary enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing many instruments, including the piano, flute, accordion and the tiple (Colombian string instrument). She loved to travel.
Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She was very friendly and made friends easily.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Nini Seaton (Jeff) of Nunn and Marcy Grogan (Butch) of Wichita, Kansas; one son, Eduardo Hernandez (Maria Helena) of Bogota; two sisters, Esther Escobar of Bogota and Annie Escobar of Medellin, Colombia and six grandchildren, Jeronimo Hernandez, Jacob Seaton, Hannah Seaton, Joseph Seaton, Micky Grogan and Nicole Grogan Herndlbauer.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Reyes and Juan Reyes.
