Don attended schools in Gering and in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. He attended Jr. College in Scottsbluff, studying to become a teacher, for one year.
He served in the Army infantry from June 1943 to December 1945. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. After discharge from the service he returned to farming with his brother in Nebraska.
On June 13, 1954, he married Elfrieda Adela Gruhn at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island, Nebraska.
Don was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Greeley from 1960 to 2012. He was also a member of NARFE(National Association of Retired Federal Employees).
He moved to Greeley with his family in 1960 and was employed by the USPS as a letter carrier until his retirement in 1988.
Don was a coin collector. He enjoyed “treasure” hunting with his metal detector he built himself from a Heath kit. He also enjoyed riding his bike. He liked sweets, especially as he was getting older. He was active in church. He liked to garden – he grew beautiful red cannas and roses and also fruit trees, peach and sour cherry.
Don spent the last years of his life at Beehive Homes in Evans. The family is eternally grateful to the staff for their excellent care.
Don is survived by his wife, Elfrieda Schlager of Greeley; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Ann and Wayne R. Evans; son and daughter-in-law Mark W. and Kathy Schlager; sisters, Lorine Elliot of Spokane, Washington and Helen Lynch of Abingdon, Maryland; grandson, Matthew Schlager and numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Edward Schlager.
Visitation 10 – 11 a.m. Friday followed by the Funeral service both at Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens.
