Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Cohen was an avid bridge competitor, receiving numerous awards throughout her life. She also was an accomplished sculptor and shared her art with family and friends. But most importantly, Mrs. Cohen loved her family unconditionally and always provided guidance and tremendous support to them. She had boundless energy and the ability to light up a room with humor, dance and great conversation.
Mrs. Cohen was the last of three daughters born to her parents, Mordechai (Boris) and Blanche Rivchis, who immigrated from Russia to the United States to provide a better life for their children. Mrs. Cohen had a tremendous appreciation for the wonderful opportunities in this country and often recalled how her father told his children to “kiss this ground” in America since it has brought them so many freedoms. As such, she inspired her children and grandchildren to pursue education and achievement.
Mrs. Cohen was married for 49 years to the late Lewis D. Cohen, and leaves behind her two children, Douglas and Carin, daughter in law, Melissa, son in law, Terry and her very dear grandchildren, Chloe, Carly, Alexis and Alana, who will forever have wonderful memories of their grandmother’s love and attention, including the great chocolates she would always send from Lazar’s chocolate shop.
Burial will be private on Friday, April 3rd at 2:45pm at Mount Carmel Cemetary in Queens. A memorial service honoring her life will be held at a later date.
