Dickey Glenn Carter died on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at his home in Grapevine Texas. Born on August 24, 1941 in McKinney, Texas, Dickey was an only child raised by his mother Beatrice Gibson, and Virgil Williams. Joining the United States Navy out of high school, Dickey served on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt for several years. During his service he was in Cuba during the “Bay of Pigs”. While in the service, Dickey was a member of the Navy band. Shortly after returning from the service, Dickey married his wife of 45 years, Norma Walker. They had many wonderful years together, prior to Norma’s death in 2006, enjoying their children and grandchildren. For over 50 years, Dickey perfected his craft in sheet metal where he worked for National Sheet Metal. Always ready to serve and volunteer, Dickey was a member of many wonderful organizations during his life. He was a Master Mason and Shriner for over 50 years and held the designation of 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, more recently serving as the Chaplain for the Grapevine chapter. Dickey also was a long time member of the Grapevine Elks lodge where he had the honor of serving as Exalted Ruler for several years. Dickey was an avid bowler and golfer and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Dickey’s life was enriched by his many friends including his lifelong childhood friend, John Wayne, he was the brother Dickey never had and they were inseparable, talking nearly every day. The friends in Dickey’s life would be too numerous to list, but Norma’s sister Sarah Helen Harris held a special place in Dickey’s heart and was a wonderful friend. Most recently prior to her death last year, Maxine Dickerson was a close companion. Dickey is survived by his loving family, son Bary Glen Carter and wife Meribeth, his daughter Sherrie Carter Thompson and husband Michael; grandchildren Christopher Thompson and his wife Kim, Kyle Carter, Lorie Thompson and Kaitlyn Carter; nieces and nephews, Loree and Mark Talley, Amy Walker, Michelle and Jeff English, Henry and Ashley Walker and Johnny and April Walker. Visitation and services for Dickey Glenn Carter will be held at the J.E. Foust and Son Funeral Home, 523 S. Main St., Grapevine, Texas. Visitation will be on Friday, August 26th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Services will be Saturday, August 27th at 10:00 a.m. Immediately following the service, the burial will be held at Bluebonnet Hills Cemetery in Colleyville, Texas. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (www.tsrhc.org) or a charity of your choosing. Dickey Glenn Carter has lived a wonderful life. We will miss his beautiful smile, inspiring laugh and generous heart.
