Matthew Moges Whitcomb

Matthew Whitcomb, age 18 of Jenison, was unexpectedly called home Sunday, April 3, 2022, to be with the Lord. Born May 15, 2003 to Shawn and Hirut Whitcomb of Jenison, Matthew attended Davenport University where he was a student of computer science and a member of the wrestling team. He was a beloved son and brother.

Matthew grew up in Jenison, attending Jenison schools and graduating in the class of 2021, where he was an excellent student and excelled in sports - being an avid wrestler and having a love for lacrosse. He went on to continue his studies and passion for sports at Davenport University where he was a member of the school’s wrestling team. Matthew was a committed young man who spent many early mornings and long nights working to better himself. In addition to his schoolwork and sports, Matthew also worked part-time when he was not at school or on the mat. Matthew worked hard at everything he did.

Matthew was quiet but funny in his own way and fiercely independent. A lifelong member of Ridgewood Christian Reformed Church, Matthew carried his faith with him daily. He loved his family and many friends. Matthew loved animals, the outdoors, and his active lifestyle - to which anyone who knew him would attest. His family will carry the best memories of him running, playing, and exploring throughout his young life. Trying to put him into words would never do justice to him.

Matthew is preceded in death by his grandparents James and Bonnie Whitcomb of Grandville and Moges Ashine and Desta Degaga of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and uncle, John Whitcomb of Grand Rapids.

Matthew is survived by his father and mother Shawn and Hirut Whitcomb of Jenison; brothers Patrick Whitcomb of Jenison, Nicholas (Rachel) Whitcomb of Royal Oak, and Nati Worku of Jenison; uncles and aunts Imru (Shitaye) Assefa of East Lansing, Cindy Young of Portland, Oregon, Shelley Whitcomb of Sand Lake, Kevin (Pamela) Whitcomb of Sitka, Alaska, Jamie (John) Bender of Newaygo, Pat Whitcomb of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Tesfaye (Elsa) Moges of Eagen, Minnesota, Luel (Frehiwet) Moges of Grand Rapids, and Solomon Moges and Hewan Moges of Addis Ababa. Matthew is also survived by countless other friends and cousins from across the country and world who love him without bounds and will miss him so very much.

In his final act of selfless giving, Matthew volunteered as an organ donor and will provide for so many who he never knew. We remain so proud of him in death as we were in life. Matthew, we are all so proud of the young man that you became and are devastated by our loss of never having met the man you would have become. Nevertheless, God has a plan for each and every one of us and though we may not know the reason why some things happen and why some are taken from us all too soon, we take comfort in the knowledge that we will one day meet again in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2022 and from 12-1 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2022, with a memorial service following at 1 p.m. all at Cook Memorial Chapel (East building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI.
