John will be remembered by his beloved wife of 28 years, Jan VanDenBerg; his children John VanDenBerg, Greg (Angela) VanDenBerg, Sheri (Dan) Freeland, and David (Rebecca) VanDenBerg; stepchildren Ron (Laura) Jolman, Randall (Leony) Jolman, Betty (Cliff) Lieffers, Lenora (Larry) DeHaan, and Karen (Mark) Riemersma; brothers Maurice (Helen) VanDenBerg and Jerry (Marty) VanDenBerg; and sister-in-law, Joanne VanDenBerg. He is also survived by his grandchildren, great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
John was raised with a love and passion for music. He played not only the bass, but also the steel guitar and piano. He and his brothers founded The VanDenBerg Bros. Orchestra at a very young age, which continued to span over decades. The band played polka music that toured the states and even cut albums. The VanDenBerg Brothers Orchestra also found time to play for church groups, veterans homes, and children’s Bible hour. He handed that passion for music down to his family, as many are musical and creative in their own ways. He loved going on trips on his Harley Davidson with his wife Jan. He had an impeccable work ethic and even served in the Army National Guard. John was a man of strong faith and love for the Lord, which he celebrated with his family. When he walked into a room, there was a presence about him with his infectious laugh that was unforgettable, and stories that made you laugh till you cried. John was happiest sitting in front of a plate of crab legs or listening to polka on the radio. He loved and cared deeply for his family and will be so missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents John Sr. and Henrietta VanDenBerg; brother, Purcell Jay VanDenBerg; and his wife, Nancy VanDenBerg.
A family committal and interment will be held at Floral View Cemetery. Due to concerns regarding COVID-19, a Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
In honor of John and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Harbor House Ministries.
The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at www.cookcares.com.
