I met Jay in September of 1961.  It was the first day of school, the fourth grade for Jay and I at Golf Elementary.  Jay and I were assigned locker partners and became fast friends.
It turned out the Loprest family had moved into a house a block away from me on Nordica in Glenview.  Of course I got to know Bud and their parents.
We went to school together from fourth grade through eighth grade when the Loprest family moved further North and we went to different high schools.  Jay was always the smartest kid in class and the best at every sport too.
My lasting memory is when Jay wrote letters to the original seven astronauts and all of them wrote back and enclosed autographed pictures.  The Glenview Announcements ran a multi page article about Jay and the Astronauts.
Jay was a great friend to me.  I am not surprised that so many friends and family have so many fond memories of Jay.  God speed, my friend.

Jay was both a coworker and friend. His time with G&T as a member of our Leadership Team was productive and extremely helpful in moving the company forward. He was quick to offer suggestions and always willing to jump in and help others solve problems. His quick wit and strong sense of humor made him a joy to work with daily. I will greatly miss starting my days talking to Jay about family and business. His example of bravely battlling while never letting go of his desire to succeed and contribute to both the success of the business and his family will long be remembered. God Speed, Jay

Jay and I were college roomies for our first year. It was magical year- at least for us. I remember it like it was yesterday. The world was a better place because Jay made sure that his energy, love and friendship touched everyone he met. I know that I am a better person because of him.

Jay and I worked together at Wieland Designs. When gas shot up we commuted together. The commutes were precious. He shared his soft side:his deep love for his family, the sacrifices he made happily. He wasn't afraid to try new things. I remember him trying to learn a few Spanish words and embarrassing himself and then laughing at himself.

I knew Jay through my position as a member of the Board of Directors for G&T Industries. I very much enjoyed talking with Jay about business as well as golf and other topics. I will miss his wit and intellect. Rest in Peace Jay, and Peace be with the family.

My favorite memories of Jay were playing 2 on 2 football with him, Steve Eich and John Ruthman. Best game ever was at Rugan school in two feet of snow!

If it wasn't for Jay I never would have made it through high school chemistry. We played hours of 3 on 3 basketball with Mark Wiemer, Chris Peterson, Jack Hoag, and Bruce Hermann. I was hoping to see him at the Wiemers' golf tournament the last 2 years, but he was unable to make it. I have nothing but great memories of Jay.

Jayne. Hi Steve Schafer here. It has been over a decade since I have seen you guys but it feels like just yesterday. I was terribly sorry to hear about Jay's passing, but if he taught my brothers and I anything it was how to approach life with passion, humbleness and mostly class. Hold on to that! I'm sure the last few days and maybe more recent past haven't been easy, but I hope that you and the kids can remember him for the great man that he was. My brothers and I have had some fun reliving our favorite Jay stories over the last few days, because there wasn't just one of them ... there were many :-) To Lindsay and Matt, I have not seen you for years, but I can tell you that your pops had a huge impact on my life. He met the Schafer family when I was a 10 year-old in 1976 and coached myself or one of my 3 brothers in baseball every year in a row for the next decade. There was a brother rule back then in Little League and he kept scooping up Schafers! Your dad was like a 2nd father to me and I guess it was simpler times back then, because I don't think stuff like that happens today. All of us Schafer boys wanted his approval because he commanded that kind of respect. He was the first to cheer you when you did something well and the first to yell at you when you did something wrong -- I got plenty of both, maybe more the latter, because quite frankly I mostly needed some discipline as a 10 year-old punk. I remember when him and your mom got married and when both of you were born! I am so sorry that he won't be around to see you as you make your way through life. Family was important to him and I am sure that will be his biggest regret. I am gonna sign off right now and have another cry about your dad. Nobody Breaks the Bank !!!

Jay's wry, knowing smile coupled with the quick "How ya doin', Duff?" was all I ever needed to once again feel embraced by the peers at the annual Wiemer Open. A quick, soulful handshake and then Jay, in that familiar gait, would chase after another one of his errant putts on the practice green. All the while shouting out greetings and humorous put-downs to others assembled. His high-pitched banter cut through the other, miscellaneous hubbub. We would all play our rounds, and then when assembled on the 19th Jay would lead the cacophony of comic insults as we tried to live down the "quality" of our games. No Shrinking Violet was Jay, simply a straightforward and witty throwback to the style of Guy-dom as it was defined in the era of our youth. A true mold breaker, and a Man I am lucky to have known. Our loss, but the Eternal lucky to have added him the Roster. Play on, Jay.

I am so saddened to hear of Jay's passing. Jay and I briefly reconnected in 2013, and at that time we reminisced about the great times we had in Glenview Little League. I am glad we had that brief reconnection, but so regretful that I didn't do a better job keeping in touch. He was a great man. True to form, Jay never mentioned he was sick when we touched base in 2013....but why would he? He was a man for others, and he never made it about himself. He was always interested in how you were, and how he could make your life better. Like Steve Schafer, I also had the privilege of playing little league baseball for Jay for 3 years in the 70's. He no doubt taught me a thing or two about baseball, but more importantly he taught me how to compete with class. He taught me how to win, and he taught me that while losing may be a necessary part of life, it is never something that we should accept or let define us. There are, of course, many memories of my time with Jay, but what resonates most is the constant laughter. I probably have more memories of the practices at Elm Park than I do of the games we actually played. Jay always had a way of making you feel really good about yourself, and he gave me an identity at a time in my life when I had none. In many ways he had a hand in making me the man I am today. Jay was a man of substance and impact, and while there is nothing I can say or write that will erase your grief, I hope you find some comfort in knowing that he had a significant impact on me, and likely many others like me.

Didn't really get to know Jay until the Wiemer Open brought us together even though we weren't close at GBS. Once we started talking, what a great, great guy. Just shocked and saddened. Will really miss Jay and his warm sense of humor.

Open, honest, tough but fair; compassionate. Humorous, subtle (sometimes), kind. So many adjectives come immediately to mind when I think of Jay. Alex and I were so sad to hear of Jay's passing. We only met Jay once with the entire family in Michigan, but we fell in love with him right away. He was so warm, kind and funny - our type of guy. Someone who knew a little about baseball told me Glenview State Bank played the game really well. Bases were always covered, relay men always went into the outfield and were lined up properly ... it was a pretty big undertaking to teach 10-11-12 year olds that and have us do it in games (almost) every time. I wore shorts to a Bank practice once and we worked on sliding that day. For like an hour. I had suspicions about whose call that was, but never wore shorts to practice again. An opposing coach once told me, "(Bank) teams are obnoxious." I didn't tell him we beat his team because his runner on third didn't know how to run the bases; I think Jay probably would have. Condolences and all the best to the Loprest family and Thank You for everything, Jay. Rest in Peace.

Knowing Jay well since high school, we know that heaven has a new left fielder for their 16" softball team, a 12 handicap after all the Wiemer GBS golf outings, and a 3 point threat at Elm Park when we ruled that court during our college summers. They also have a positive coach of young athletes, another frustrated Cubs fan, and a proud husband and father. But most of all, heaven now has a great friend to many of us who we could count on with a quick wit and sense of humor that kept the rest of us on our toes. To Jayne, Lindsey, Matt, Bud and his family, our deepest sympathy for your loss. All the Wiemers are so glad Jay and you have been a big part of our extended family. Herb, Boopie & Peanut, To say I'm shocked and saddened would be an understatement. God how we loved Jay. All of our rounds of golf. All of our New Years Eve dinners when Matt would eat bologna instead of the crab legs. Boopie 'divorcing' me after only one year of marriage. I can't imagine the pain you must feel. Lefty was taken from us way to early and to have it happen to Jay is unbearable. I can't continue, because my tears are falling on my keyboard. God bless you all. We love you.

I usually only got to see Jay once a year at the Wiemer outing. I could always count on him to come up to me at the putting green with an enthusiastic greeting and warm smile. I'll miss that very much.
