Karen Renee Kuhn, known as Katie by many and Kay by her sweetheart, age 72, left to be with Christ on August 30, 2022. Karen was born in Detroit on September 26, 1949, one of the three daughters of Kenneth Rhodes & Goldie Marie (Riggleman) Froman.
As a young adult, one of Karen’s favorite pastimes was roller skating. One day while at the Rouge Park Rollerdrome in Dearborn with some friends, Karen met Harold Kuhn. Smitten, they started dating and soon married on January 19, 1974. And as Karen always said “We’ve been going round and round ever since.” She loved to laugh, and he made her laugh for 48 years.
With a job change taking the couple to Grand Rapids, Karen settled into homemaking. With a deep love for children and dogs, she raised two sons, several foster children, and a number of dogs. She was well known to express her affection through cooking and baking, including her famous annual Christmas cookies and candies. She also excelled at many hobbies, including ceramics, knitting, crocheting, quilting, crafting with the kids, gardening, and playing the organ. She celebrated every holiday, birthday and occasion like it was Christmas. Who can forget the slime green St. Patrick’s Day soup?
She was always very active with aerobics (Sweating to the Oldies blared from the living room at 5:00AM), swimming in her pool and walking. She enjoyed Lake Michigan, spending vacations in Traverse City, and family day trips to Grand Haven, going for ice cream, walking the pier, and watching sunsets. Even bopping around town on mundane errands was made exciting and fun with her imagination and sense of adventure. She also enjoyed trips to New York, Florida and West Virginia, meeting with relatives.
Strong willed and ambitious, Karen earned her GED and an Associates in Business Administration, while raising children and working. Her smarts and work-ethic found her the office manager for several businesses over the course of her career.
Though Karen’s physical health started declining in her 40s, she fought hard but increasingly retreated to the comfort of home and husband. She loved playing games, including 500, Rummy and Uno, especially with her grandson, who brought her immeasurable joy. This generous, sweet, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister could light up any room with her flawless skin and sparkling personality (and wardrobe). She will be deeply missed.
Karen is survived by her husband, Harold C. Kuhn II; her sons Harold “Casey” (Mary) Kuhn III and Scott (Paige Scheidel) Kuhn; her grandson Colton Holmes; her sisters Gloria Jean Froman and Glenda (Leonard) Rucker; niece and nephew Angela (John) Sweeney and Steven (Angela) Rucker; cousins William (Lorraine) Steele, Faith (Anthony) Gill; and her Yorkie, Twinkle who warmed her lap and heart.
Visitation for Karen will be held on Tuesday September 6, 2022 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Ada Bible Church, Knapp St. Campus; 3869 Knapp St. Grand Rapids, MI where a funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. Private burial will be at Fairplains Cemetery.
