Survived by his wife of 53 years Marjorie, sons Jack III (Krina) Young, Luke (Danielle) Young. Grandchildren Jack IV, Elias, Austin and Brecken, siblngs Dick (Laura) Young, David (Carol) Young, Anne Johnson and Michelle Williams, sister –n –law Dr. Murlene McKinnon and James Christie, Murray (Jody) MacGready, Loanna (Jack) Ammerman, Arnette Lamoreaux, Steve Cabler and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Preceded by parents John L. Young Sr., Helen Young, Lou and John MacGready and Alan Johnson.
Jack graduated from Pinckney High School. He obtained a B.S. and a Masters from Central Michigan University and a Specialist Degree from Eastern Michigan University.
Jack proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a First Lieutenant with the United States Army, stationed in Okenawa Japan. Afterwards he went to work at Ford Motor Company as a plant supervisor. Three years later he joined the Grand Rapids public schools from 1975 to 1983, as a Community School Director and then became a Shared Time Director. In 1983 he went to work for Catholic Secondary Schools, retiring in 2009. Jack wasn’t retired long before he became a Grand Rapids Police Department Volunteer patrolling the handicap parking spaces. He also worked with the Pentwater food pantry.
He enjoyed golfing, riding his bike and life with his family, highlighted by trail bike riding in the woods up north and swimming in the river. He lived a vibrant full life and will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 27, 2019, at Reyers North Valley Chapel Funeral Home from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. and a time of sharing at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday October 28, 2019 at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, 301 Sheldon Ave SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49503. Military Honors will be accorded to Jack by the Kent County Honor Guard and the U.S. Army. Please make donations to Catholic Central High School and West Catholic High School, Tuition Assistance.
