Carol is survived by her husband of 44 years, Alan, sisters Jo and Bette, children Daniel (Laura), Laura (Jan), and Anne (Ken), grandchildren Olivia, Nick, Josh, Monica, and Tony (Amber), as well as her great-grandson Jackson and her rescued beagle Lily. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Carol took great joy in her family and friends and they all love her dearly.
In addition to being an amazing mother, wife, and friend, Carol was an educator, community organizer, and lecturer. She was a champion for many causes, a tireless advocate for children in need, and a lifelong defender of diversity and civil rights.
She was a vital member of innumerable organizations. Among others, she was dedicated to her work with the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program, the National Parent Aide Program, the Fair Housing Center, the National Association of Foster Care Reviewers, and the Grand Rapids Children’s Assessment Center.
Carol was a poet and writer. She valued her time as an active participant in several writers’ groups and enjoyed attending writing conferences, including the Writers’ Workshop at The University of Iowa.
A memorial service in celebration of the life of Carol will be held on Monday, November 26, 2012 at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave., N.E., Grand Rapids at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Doug Van Doren, pastor of Plymouth United Church of Christ officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to celebrate Carol’s life consider a donation to CASA of Kent County in her honor.
