Bonnie Lee Matthews (98), a child of God, has finished her life of service to others and has entered her heavenly home on January 17, 2020. She was the last of her generation and was preceded in death by her Father William Reeme; Stepfather George McElroy; Mother Martha (Day) Reeme McElroy; Brother William Reeme Jr.; Sisters Blance Varson Barrett Jones McFarland, Eunice Reeme and Myrtis Almond; Husband Dr. Victor Matthews and Son-in-law William Gene Marshall. She is survived by her Daughter Susan Marshall, Son Victor (Janet) Matthews, Granddaughter Julia (John) Lyons, Grandson Victor (Wanda) Matthews, five Great Grandchildren and five Great Great Grandchildren.
Bonnie's Father passed away when she was seven leaving her Mother with three children to care for at the beginning of the Depression. The family's deep religious beliefs, devoted family ties and strong work ethic carried them through the Depression. Her Mother married George McElroy when Bonnie was thirteen and he was a wonderful Father to her. In high school she met Victor Matthews and guided him in finding an intimate relationship with his Savior. After high school, Bonnie and Victor attended Simpson Bible College in Seattle, married and then moved to Grand Rapids to attend the Baptist Bible Institute and School of Theology (now Cornerstone University).
Four years after graduating from Evening School and with her children in school, Bonnie accepted a position at the Baptist Bible Institute. During her thirty-five years, she served as receptionist, cashier, bookkeeper, librarian, registrar, office manager and then the president's personal administrative secretary. In 1973 Bonnie was honored as Alumnus of the Year.
Bonnie was a very affectionate, sociable person who loved people, put the welfare of others ahead of her own and was very grateful for all she received. The family would like to thank special friends Max Colley Jr. and Maria Gregory for their regular visits, the staff of Laurus Home Care and the residents and staff of Story Point for the exceptional level of care, comfort and friendship provided to Bonnie. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 31, 2020 at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave. NE, Grand Rapids; with visitation one hour prior to the service at the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to your church or Cornerstone University.
