Arlene Kay Patterson

She was born to the late Wallace and Sophie Downer, March 28, 1942, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Arlene graduated from Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School in 1960 and received a BA in education from Central Michigan University in 1964.

She married Brian Patterson in 1965, and they lived together in Grand Rapids for their entire lives. Arlene is survived by her husband Brian and sons Shawn Patterson, Brad (Faythe) Patterson, and her son-in-law Jim (Diane) VanderWall; along with three grandchildren Gracie, Micah, and Sophie Patterson. She is also survived by her sister Barbara Bowe & Roman (Christine) Downer, and many other family and friends who loved her. Arlene was preceded in death by her loving daughter, Tamara Lynn in 2006.

Arlene was an avid reader, knitter, gardener, and she loved going for brisk walks with family and friends. She spent years as a teacher, a home maker, and also dedicated many years working in a variety of medical offices. She was a strong believer and follower of Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior; and always had the local Christian radio station on in the background while at home or driving. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, God's Kitchen, Sophia's House, and other groups. She was a lifelong student of God's word, and set an incredible example for her children by attending weekly Bible study groups for her entire life.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 2 2023 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Reyers North Valley Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Jude Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. and the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Private Burial will be at Blythefield Memory Gardens.
