Barbara was born on August 9, 1930 in Grand Prairie, Texas to Eugene L. Parker and Lucy Jane Hibler Parker. She was the last surviving child of seven siblings. She grew up in Grand Prairie, graduated from Grand Prairie High School where she was a member of the choir. Barbara was a member of the First Christian Church in Grand Prairie where her father was a Deacon and a founding member of the church. This was where her love of music began and she became one of two soloists for the church choir until she moved to Houston in 1969.
She married C.H. "Buddy" Scarborough, Jr. in Grand Prairie. While Buddy was in the Army, they lived for a short time on base in El Paso, and then embarked on an adventurous two years in Alaska. While in Alaska, Buddy thrived with all the fishing and hunting, while Barbara counted down the days for their return to Texas. With Buddy's release from the Army they returned to Grand Prairie, where they made a home and family. Mark was born in 1955 and Lisa in 1957.
They eventually moved to Houston in 1969. Barbara had a passion for flowers and plants. She loved sitting in her Garden Room with her hot cup of coffee. No day was complete without working in her flowerbeds or taking care of her African Violets, Orchids and the miracle of other plants. A trip to a local nursery was her Disneyland.
There was no greater love and passion than that of her own family. She so loved her four granddaughters with all her heart. The only love that could compare was her love for Banner, her great grandson. She felt so blessed having them all in her life. And nothing gave her more peace and joy than knowing her grand girls were happy and safe, and she was so grateful to the partners they chose, and she loved them as well.
Barbara is survived by her son, Mark, and daughter-in-law, Sally. Her daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law, Joe. Also surviving, her granddaughters, Amanda Marie Scarborough, her husband, Donnie Leschber, Alissa Shay Church, Shawna Leigh Church and Zak Workman, Chesley Wray Church Goodman and husband, Corey Goodman, as well as her great grandson Banner Ash Bonilla. And last, but not least Barbara’s loving companion, her dog, Minnie.
Barbara is preceded in death by her loving husband, Buddy, whom she worried over and cared for during his battle with lung cancer. Also preceding her in death, her siblings, Wilma, Eugene, Irene, Doug, Don and Bill.
Barbara will be laid to rest Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Old Southland Cemetery in Grand Prairie, Texas.
