Mary Louise Davenport 1923 – 2011 Mary Lou Davenport (88) died Sunday, May 22, 2011 in the Mesa Manor Care and Rehab Center in Grand Junction, Colorado, under Hospice of Western Colorado care. She was born in 1923 in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Jesse M. Mann and Marian F. Wilbur Mann of Monte Vista, Colorado. She was a graduate of Monte Vista High School. She married Edgar E. Davenport of Center, Colorado in 1943 and, as the wife of a career Army officer, she moved the family at least 23 times, living in eight states, Japan and Europe. She worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" during WWII, a dental assistant and a Red Cross volunteer for 50 years, 41of them at Fort Carson. She was a member of the Colorado Springs First Presbyterian Church until 2007, serving in many capacities including deacon, on the Bereavement Committee and the Get Set Program. Mom was an avid seamstress, gardener, cookie maker and pie baker. Pies were often used as bartering chips in the family - a lemon meringue for a clump of iris. Warm loaves of date bread and cookies found their way to the neighbors as well as the Get Set Program. Like her mother before her, her garden was always a delight. Never one to give up on a challenge, her foray into knitting one pair of argyle socks lasted for years. She was a caregiver for her aunt, mother-in-law and her own mother. Since 2007 she has been living at the Commons Assisted Living Center in Grand Junction. She is survived by a daughter, Judith A. Chun (Dennison) of Pearl City, Hawaii and a son, James M. Davenport (Mary) of Grand Junction, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Laura Chun Daniel, Mary, Chun Santos, Bradley Chun, Aaron Davenport. Kristan Davenport Richardson, Christopher and Michael Bautista, and 15 great-grandchildren, Nickolas, Maximus, Meleane, Maka, Mana, Samantha, Alexis, Aarynne, Evan, Dasia, Amari, Alex, Noah, Lilly, Micah and Michael. Funeral arrangements were made by Martin Mortuary of Grand Junction. Internment is with her husband at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
