Joyce was born on April 12, 1940 in Virginia, Minnesota, to Donald and Marie (Draves) Gibson. She spent her childhood in Minnesota, and attended high school at Humboldt High in St. Paul. She later moved to San Diego, where she met and married the love of her life, Jimmie Looney, on December 4, 1964, in Winterhaven, California. Jimmie was serving in the US Navy at that time, and Joyce became a Navy wife. Jimmie and Joyce raised their family in San Diego until 1979, when they moved to Minnesota for a year. Following that, the family moved to Grand Junction, where Joyce has lived for the last 42 years. Joyce worked as a merchandiser, but was most proud of being a homemaker. She was a member of the Catholic Church, and in her free time, she enjoyed quilting, listening to live music with friends, and spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren, and had extra special time with Talon. Before Jimmie passed away in 2011, they loved fishing, camping, and traveling back to Minnesota to see family together.
Joyce is survived by her daughters, Deb Griffith of San Tan Valley, Arizona, and Lisa Looney of Grand Junction; sisters, Barb Omlie of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Lynda Carroll of Colorado Springs, and Kathy Landru of Apple Valley, Minnesota; her favorite niece, Jen Omlie; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Don and Marie Gibson; brother, Jim Gibson; and sister, Bonnie Lindsey.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 19th at 10 am at Martin Mortuary. Joyce’s celebration of life will begin at 11 am, and committal will take place at 1 pm at the Veterans Cemetery of Western Colorado.
