After graduating from high school, she was able to work her way through college. Her goal was to be a teacher.
Geneva met her future husband, Elmer Eugene Hicks, while doing volunteer work at a VA Hospital. After they were married, they moved to Grand Junction. She was able to begin teaching Home Making at Fruita High School. She had a kindergarten in her home while her children were smaller. In time she went back to District 51 school district teaching at Grand Junction Junior High. She was proud of the fact that she started a boy’s Home Making class in the Junior High. She finished her teaching career at Central High School. She retired in her mid-50s as she had always planned. She did not want to stay till she was so old the students made fun of her. She then worked at United Cable for 10 more years. Her life centered around family, work and the First Baptist Church.
