It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our Dearest Mother Ethel Mae (Gilbert) Atwood on July 6, 2024 in Grand Junction, CO. She was born May 27, 1932, in De Beque, to Annie Louise Gilbert (Taylor) and Howard Orville Gilbert. Preceding her death were her sisters, Ruby Stout (Floyd), Lucille Crandell (Marion), Adele Crandell (Bill), Fern Bowman; brothers Ralph Gilbert (Velma), Joe Gilbert and Jimmy Gilbert. Also her husbands Howard Barrow and Melvin Atwood.
She is survived by daughters Margaret Prather (Lyle deceased) Lelia Barrow Garcia (Mike) and son Bert Barrow (Gaelynn); Granddaughters Lisa Prather, Leslie Weis (JJ) Shaelin Barrow and Grandson Ean Barrow. Great grandchildren include Scottie and Ava Vines; Piper and Paxton-Prather Wareham. Numerous Atwood step children and grandchildren.
After graduating from De Beque High School she married Howard Barrow and moving to Piceance Creek working for the Oldlands and Square S Ranches. Moving back to the De Beque area she continued raising her children becoming a homemaker, ranch hand and running hay equipment on Roan Creek and Dry Fork.
Later she married Melvin (Cap) Atwood guide and outfitter. Thus becoming a partner in the business packing in tents with horses and wagon and becoming the head camp cook for up to 30 hunters in a season.
In her retirement years Mother was most known for her quilt making and she made a lot of them for sisters, nieces, friends, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most importantly Mother will be remembered for her kind and gentle nature, her love of life, her family and her generous heart. Mother was always ready to lend a helping hand whether transporting children, assisting with yard work, or caretaking of others. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be held at Callahan-Edfast, 2515 Patterson Rd, Grand Junction on July 19, 2024 at 10:00 am.
