Gordon Daryl Craig Porter (Flash)
August 25, 1950 – November 10, 2016
Daryl was born in Santa Barbara, CA, to Bill and Leah Jo Craig. He is better known to family and friends as Flash, a nickname his Dad gave to him.
He spent his childhood in the Clifton-Palisade area where his Dad’s family was. At age 10 he went to California where his Mom’s family was. He spent his teenage years in San Jose and went to school there. At age 15 he, his brother, and two friends started a band that his mother managed. He loved to play his guitar and sing. His band got to open for the Band Cream. He was always excited about that.
At age 17 he went to work for the offshore oil rigs and did that for two years. Then at 19 he and his brother moved to Fort Collins, CO, where he worked construction. In 1974 he moved to Craig to work in the coal mine. That is where he met his wife, Shirley. They were married in 1977 and had one son, Jeff. He enjoyed coaching his son’s Little League teams. He also played in a band he and his brother-in-law started. Music was a big part of his life, but his family was always first. He enjoyed fishing and camping in his earlier years. In 2010 he moved back to Palisade where he enjoyed his time outside in the garden. On November 10, 2016, after a long illness, he went home with the Lord with his wife by his bedside.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Palisade; his son, Jeff (Mindy) and two granddaughters, Nakena and Jocelyn of Arvada. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and grandparents.
He will be missed by family and friends. Services will be held at the Grace Baptist Church, 503 Lincoln Street, Palisade at 11:00 a.m. on November 26, 2016. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Palisade Brewery with friends and family after the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hope West, 3090 B N. 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
