Steven was born on July 20, 1946, in Grand Junction, Colorado, to Adolph Novotny and Marie H. Hundley. He spent his childhood in Grand Junction and graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1965. Steven proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed at Khe Sanh. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and served as a crash crew rescueman. After his military service, Steven worked at the Veterans Administration in Grand Junction from 1970 until his retirement in 2006.
A faithful member of Clifton Bible Church, Steven loved God with all his heart. He found joy in studying Scripture and in serving others. He also enjoyed singing and playing his guitar. Above all, Steven cherished the time spent with his beloved wife, Ida, whom he married on November 13, 1967. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and a cherished figure in the lives of many who knew him as “Grandpa Steve.”
Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Marie Novotny. He is survived by his wife, Ida Novotny; his sons, Yuri D. Novotny (Isela) and Michael C. Novotny (Katie); his sister, Martha Kay Ulibarri; five grandchildren; and many others who considered him a grandfather figure due to his loving and generous nature.
A funeral service in Steven's honor will be held on November 21, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Callahan Edfast Mortuary. Following the service, a brief military honors ceremony will take place at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado at 1:00 PM. Friends and family are also invited to join in a potluck celebration of life for Steven at the VFW at 1:30 PM.
Steven will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
