HAWLEY, Mary Ellen – age 74 of Grand Blanc, MI passed away Friday, August 25, 2017 at Henry Ford in Detroit, MI. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 from 10AM-12PM. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 12PM at Hill Funeral Home – 11723 S. Saginaw St. Grand Blanc, MI. Burial will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI. Mary Ellen was born October 6, 1942 in Chicago, IL to the late Emmett and Virginia (Farrell) Stead. She attended Marion College earning a B.S. and was certified a Medical Technologist by St. Vincent’s Hospital. Mary Ellen worked as a Medical Technologist from 1963-1969 for various hospitals. She proved the theory that Navy Fighter Pilots get the hottest girls when she married John A. Hawley III on April 28, 1967 in San Diego, CA. She was a 20 year Navy wife and John’s hottest girl for 50 years. As president of the Officers Wives Club and Ombudsman for the USS America crew of 4,000 (1975-1978) she received “A Letter of Commendation” for being “A pillar of strength in times of crisis and an inspiration…to the Navy family”. Mary Ellen was the Manager of Dillard’s shoe department in the Sooner Mall in Norman, OK from 1984-2000. She also received an award for her dedication and leadership as president of the Auxiliary of MidMichigan Medical Center in Alma MI, 2003-2009. Mary Ellen was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Blanc. She was deeply interested in everyone she met; and, she cared about them. She was a constant charitable volunteer and contributor to those in need. Her vivacious, determined, generous, loving, and fun loving personality will be missed by her family and friends. Mary Ellen is survived by her husband, John A. Hawley III; children, Michelle (Dave) Whitney, Jack S. Hawley, Jimmy (Stacy) Hawley, and Ann Werring; grandchildren, Jarrett Cornwell, Jesse Cornwell, Jordan Cornwell, Caden Hawley, Abbey Hawley, Austin Werring, Elizabeth Bourassa, Jay Sargent, and Brezlin Sargent; and great-granddaughter, Mia Cornwell. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Hawley and brothers, Tom and Jack Stead.
