Marilyn Brown (88) passed away on Monday August 26, 2024 in Grand Blanc, MI. Marilyn was a Head Librarian for the Genesee District Library Fenton branch for many years and later became the GDL's Special Events Coordinator. She was the daughter of the late Charles B. and Mary E. Powers. Marilyn was born in Cincinnati, OH in December of 1935. Marilyn attended Western College for Women in Oxford, OH and later graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from University of Cincinnati. Marilyn moved to Flint, MI in 1966 with her husband and young son. She quickly became active in the Flint community. Marilyn became a member of the Flint Junior League and shortly thereafter became a board member for the Flint Institute of Arts. In 1979, Marilyn began working for the Genesee District Library system, where she developed their first library volunteer program. In the years that followed, Marilyn became the head librarian of the Fenton branch and GDL's Special Events Coordinator, retiring in 2010.
Marilyn was a strong, interesting, worldly, funny, well-read, and elegant woman. She had a lifelong love of reading and learning. She was always quick to share a good book with friends and family. She was very active in the Flint community, particularly in the Flint Cultural Center. She had an incredible ability to turn any situation, no matter how mundane, into an amazing, special occasion. Marilyn loved and was greatly dedicated to her family, particularly her two grandchildren. In addition, Marilyn was well loved by the Flint community and the many organizations she supported over the years.
She is survived by her son Jeffrey (Megan) Brown, her brother Charles W. Powers, her grandchildren Harrison & Sadie Brown, her nephew Mark (Carolyn) Powers, her niece Lori (Doug Kisker) Powers, her great-nephew & great-niece Daniel Powers and Lyla Graf as well as many others who loved her.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Brown, her sister-in-law Marian Powers and her beloved daughter Elizabeth Brown.
A funeral visitation for Marilyn will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 South Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, Michigan 48439. A funeral service will occur Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Christophers Episcopal Church, 9020 S.Saginaw Street #G, Grand Blanc, MI 48439, with visitation one hour prior to service at 10:00am.
