James was born in Neola, Iowa on February 27, 1934. A graduate of Holly High School and a graduate of Eastern Michigan University receiving a Bachelor's degree in Finance. James served in the United States Army for 2 years at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. James began his career at AC Spark Plug as an hourly stock handler, after getting his college degree he joined the financial department at AC as an Junior Accountant and then held a number of analytical and supervisory positions. James retired after 39 years with the Automotive Components Group of General Motors. He was a member of The Holy Family Catholic Church for 48 years.
James leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 48 years Elizabeth; his children Mike(Susan) Smith and Marie (Mark) Melchior; grandchildren, Alex, Tom, Danielle, Audrey, katie and many nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Caroline Smith; twin sisters Joan Westerlund and Joann Rich.
A visitation for James will be held Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 South Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, Michigan 48439. A rosary service will occur Thursday, June 22, 2023 at 7:00 PM, 11723 South Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, Michigan 48439. A funeral mass will occur Friday, June 23, 2023 at 10:00 AM with visitation one hour prior beginning at 9:00 Am at The Holy Family Catholic Church, 11804 S Saginaw St, Grand Blanc, Michigan.
