Douglas Mark Hollingsworth died peacefully at home in Dexter, MI with his family by his side January 9, 2024. Doug was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014. Doug was born on October 30, 1942 to Marjorie and Robert Hollingsworth in Galesburg, IL.
Doug spent his early years growing up in Iowa and California. He graduated from Downey High School in Downey, CA in 1961. He was a baseball and water polo player while in high school and participated in Navy ROTC. Shortly before graduation Doug was diagnosed with lymphosarcoma. Treatment lasted over 10 years and he carried the consequences of the cancer treatment and cure for the rest of his life. He went on to graduate from The University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science in Business Finance.
His professional career began in business ownership after creating an LLC which operated all food services for Park City Ski Resort. He left that behind to manage the Deer Park Lodge at Deer Valley Ski Resort. After a return to Michigan Doug had a varied career in sales working primarily in window and kitchen design and home improvement.
Doug and his wife Karen Wismer were married in 1978 in Flint, MI and they moved back to Michigan in 1989 from Park City. They settled in Goodrich with their sons Alexander and Scott. Over the years he enjoyed the music and athletic interests their boys pursued. Doug and Karen attended many Univ of Utah football games as well as Univ of Michigan football and hockey games together over the years. They were members at First Presbyterian Church Ann Arbor at the time of his death.
Doug is fondly remembered for many wonderful qualities. He was honest, fun and upright. He had a quirky, off-beat sense of humor. He enjoyed building, plumbing, electrical work, car maintenance/ repairs and helping his neighbors. He was a loud and enthusiastic cheerleader for his son, Scott’s, hockey and football teams. He was equally proud of his son Alex’s musical talents and enjoyed attending Alex’s concerts. We like to think he was an enthusiastic Wolverine, but his true loyalty was as a Utah Ute. He is fondly missed and his departure from this life to the next of peace and joy leaves an absence that will never be filled.
Doug was predeceased by his niece Robin Wright, his twin brother Donald, and his parents. He is survived by his wife Karen Wismer Hollingsworth, sons Alexander and Scott Hollingsworth, his sister Beverly Karfiol and husband Sylvan of Fairfield CA. He also is survived by many nieces, nephews and in laws.
Donations can be made in Doug’s memory to the Michigan Alzheimer’s Association or to charity of your choice. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, January 17, 2024, with visitation at 12 PM and the service at 1 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Flint. A Memorial Open House will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024, from 1-4 PM at the Hollingsworth residence in Dexter.
