Catherine was born in Flint, MI on May 8, 1932, the eldest child of Stephen Clarke Canning and Mary Agnes (Foy) Canning. Catherine graduated from St. Michael's High School in Flint and later obtained her nursing training at St. Francis School of Nursing at Columbus, Ohio. She received special training in anesthesia at Minneapolis General Hospital in Minnesota. She married James P. McGuire in 1958 and they settled in Flint, MI to raise a family of 6 children. Catherine worked as a nurse anesthetist at St. Joseph Hospital for 35 years, and at Genesys for another 5 years. After retirement, she served on the Ethics committee at Genesys Hospital. Catherine was President of Mott College Faculty Wives club, and a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of the Hibernians.
In 2003, Catherine was awarded the title 'Irish Mother of the Year' in Flint, MI. An honor her mother, Agnes, had received many years before her.
Catherine lived life to the very fullest - as a young adult, she enjoyed swimming and skiing, making family trips to visit relatives in Colorado, and spending summers in East Tawas, MI, with her brothers and sisters. Later, while raising her family of 6 children, she participated in functions at Mott College where her husband, Jim, worked. She enjoyed hosting parties at her home, and decorating her home for every holiday - making it special for her husband and children. She enjoyed spending time at Anna Maria Island, Florida, where she welcomed every member of her extended family, and all of her friends, to stay with her any time she was there.
Catherine loved nature - she would admire how green the grass is outside, or how pretty the snow is. She loved all birds and animals, often making an effort to rescue animals that looked to be in trouble. She absolutely adored her companion dogs - first Willy, then Billy, and finally, Duffy. They brought immense happiness to her.
First and foremost, Catherine loved her family - her mother and father, her siblings, her children, grand-children, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Most likely, every one of her family can remember some special moments with her. Catherine loved to travel and if there was someone in the family that she could stop and visit on the way to her destination, she didn't mind making a side-trip. She loved her friends and enjoyed spending time with them, often traveling to other countries.
Catherine was a fun-loving, intelligent, and generous person. She will be missed very much by all who could call her friend or family. She is preceded in death by her husband, James McGuire, her daughter, Erin (McGuire) Ecklund and John Ecklund, her parents, her sister, Margaret Mary (Canning) Daly, her brothers, Tom, Jack, and Pat Canning.
She is survived by her children, Mary Catherine (McGuire) Gendrikovs of Kalamazoo, MI, John McGuire of Fenton, MI, Colleen (McGuire) and Tony Tinnin of Grand Blanc, MI, Angela McGuire and her husband Alan Dinehart of Grand Ledge, MI, Mike and Tressa McGuire of Pinckney, MI.
