Betty Jane Mary (Martin) Turner-Snyder was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, March 8th, 2023 at the age of 93 yrs. Although we know that she has gone to a better place, her family and friends will certainly miss her.
Betty Martin was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 26th, 1929, to Ernest and Sylvanie Martin. Betty was the youngest of seven children. She attended Manierre Elementary School and graduated from Waller High School in 1947. Betty met her future husband, Don V. Turner, while working for the State of Illinois in Chicago. She and Don were united in marriage July 1st, 1950, in Chicago. She spent her 1st year of marriage in Panama due to Don being drafted into the Korean War. Following his term of service, they returned to live in Chicago. While living in Chicago, they had two children, Deborah Ann in 1954 and John Michael in 1958.
In 1962, they relocated from Chicago to Effingham, Illinois. There they joined St. John's Lutheran Church.
Betty was married to Don until his death in 1990. A few years later she met Keith Snyder at a dance, fell in love and married Keith in 1996. They resided in Effingham until Keith's passing in 2010. At that time Betty relocated to Orlando, Florida to live with her daughter, Deborah and her husband, Gary M Hoover. She was residing there at the time of her passing.
Betty loved life.. she enjoyed music, dancing, gardening, golfing, baking, shopping, homemaking and being with her family and friends. She loved to travel to new places and take cruises. She also was active in her community as a member of Effingham’s Garden Club and the Women’s Home Extension Club. She was a long time member of St. John's Lydia Guild and a volunteer for creating Braille Bibles. Her love of God and her faith was very important to her.
Upon relocating to Orlando, she joined Woodlands Lutheran Church in Montverde, Florida. She was also
an active member of Share the Care for seniors.
Her career consisted of several positions, mainly associated with finance & bookkeeping. She spent many years working at G.C. Murphys Store and Spiegel Catalog Co.
Betty is survived by her children, Deborah (Gary M) Hoover of Orlando, Florida, John (Jocelyn) Turner of Las Vegas, Nevada and her stepchildren, Kendall (Debbie) Snyder of Lakewood, Illinois, Kara Shuff of Shelbyville, Illinois and Kathy (Shane) Lay of Haubstadt, Indiana.
Betty is also survived by her grandchildren - Jennifer (Chad) Shoemaker, Lauren (Andy) Cole, Cody (Rachel) Snyder, Autum Snyder, Trenton Shuff, Lexie (Zach) Davis, Maisie Lay, Skylar Lay and 6 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her 8 nieces, 5 nephews, her brother-in-law Charles Graves and sister-in-law Madelyn Martin.
Preceding her into death are her parents Ernest and Sylvanie Martin, her brothers: Harold Martin, Ernest (Mildred) Martin, Walter (Fran) Martin and her sisters: Rita (Robert) Johnston, Ruth (George) Himber and Estelle Wernet, her brother-in-law Max (Doris) Turner, her sister-in-law Charois Graves and niece Diane (Robert) Jensen.
A memorial service for Betty will be held Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 400 Woodlawn Cemetery Road, Gotha, Florida 34734, followed by a reception from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
