Steve graduated from High School in Fort Morgan, Colorado. He attended Colorado State University where he received a B.S. in Outdoor Recreation from the College of Forestry and Natural Resources. Steve was a wildland firefighter (Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming) for 4 years and aided in fighting 42 wildfires. After graduating from college, he worked for the Bureau of Land Management where he served in the following positions – Ranger, Outdoor Recreation Planner, Natural Resource Specialist, Computer Specialist, IT Operations Manager, and Chief Information Officer (CIO).
Steve received his Masters Certification for Project Management from George Washington University and as well received a Masters for Chief Information Officer from the College of Information Resource Management at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.
Steve met the love of his life and eternal companion LuAnn Huff in 1975 and they were sealed together in the Salt Lake City, Utah temple for time and eternity on January 23rd, 1976. Steve and LuAnn were blessed with 5 children – 2 daughters and 3 sons who are the light of their lives.
Steve was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served the Lord in many ways. He was ordained as a Bishop on August 16th, 1992. Other positions he served in included: Elders Quorum President, Ward Executive Secretary, Stake High Councilor, Stake Clerk, Scout Master, Cub Scout Master, Gospel Doctrine Teacher, Stake Temple Worker, Phoenix Region Welfare Agent, Arizona Department of Corrections – Lewis Prison Teacher, Stake Web Administrator, and Primary Teacher.
His love of God and nature was evident in everything he did. Steve loved animals and throughout his life raised everything from horses, chickens, ducks, snakes, birds, fish, chameleons and more. Steve spent lots of time outdoors and had an avid thirst to learn and share all kinds of history.
Steve was preceded in death, and was called to his heavenly home, by his son John Alan Wing.
He is survived by his eternal sweetheart LuAnn, parents John Eugene Wing and Helen Marcille Wing, his sister Vicki (Richard) Mildenberger, his children Kathryn Wing Alexander, Crystal (Tom) DeGraw, (Summer Wing), David (Jessica) Wing, and Daniel (Tayler) Wing, and his 16 grandchildren.
Steve lived his life to the fullest and believed that, “if a little is good – a lot is better”. This was no truer than in the love he showed to everyone/family.
A service of remembrance will be held Saturday, April 29th, 2023 at 11:00am in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints chapel located at 425 Estrella Parkway Goodyear, AZ 85338.
