LaVerne Mitchell, age 99 passed away on Monday, July 8, 2024. She was born Oma LaVerne Plaster in Carnegie, Oklahoma on May 21, 1925. She was raised in Swan Lake and graduated as valedictorian from Alfalfa High School at age 16. In 1942, she moved to Coldwater (now Avondale), Arizona to work at the town's first grocery store - Plasters Grocery Store. She married Captain James William Mitchell in Wickenburg in 1947 and spent the next 15 years as an officer's wife stationed all over the world. She raised five children while volunteering as a Red Cross Gray Lady. She was a no-frills, no-nonsense kind of woman, but she had a kind heart and an abundance of humor and sass. She fed her ever-growing family (and the neighborhood kids) with her Wednesday night dinners. She was an avid reader, and she enjoyed soaking in the rays of the Arizona sun. She led an active life and was the ultimate local sports fan. She had lifelong friends, and with them she traveled to all corners of the globe. She was a wonderful woman who brought joy to those who knew her, and she will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ora Clyde Plaster and Eula Pearl Gage Plaster, and one son Barry Mitchell. She is survived by her sister Mildred Maxine Plaster Bartram, two sons James Mitchell and Jon Mitchell, two daughters, Kimberly Jones and Kitty Mitchell, 9 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. At last, as she said, she'll finally get some peace and quiet.
