It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard “Rick” Dale Martin, our loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. On December 8, 2023, at the age of 71, Rick passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Monrovia, California, where he had lived for over 43 years.
Rick was born on November 13, 1952, in Los Angeles County, to Earl “Bud” and Hazel Martin. He attended Gravoy Elementary and Wilson Junior High School in Los Angeles before graduating from Alhambra High School in 1970. Rick then pursued higher education at California State University, Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor's of Arts in 1974 and a Master's of Arts in Education in 1980. During his teaching career he taught at John Muir Middle School, Marshall Fundamental High School, and then, in 1989, began a 24 year career at South Pasadena High School. Rick was an exceptional teacher who inspired his students to think critically and work hard, and to have fun doing it. He influenced thousands of students over that time period. His passion and commitment to their education will be one of his enduring legacies. In 2013, after 39 years of enlightening young minds, Rick retired from teaching.
Upon retirement, Rick volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) through the Edmund D. Edelman Children's Court. He was passionate about advocating for children in the foster system, many of whom had experienced hardship, abuse, and neglect. Using his extensive knowledge of the education system, Rick worked tirelessly to represent the best interests of these children. He patiently built trust with them and did everything he could to help shape a positive future for them.
Beyond his volunteer work, Rick was committed to maintaining an active lifestyle. He held a Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, played men's slow pitch softball, golfed regularly, lifted weights at the gym, and frequently went on long walks. His dedication to health and fitness played a significant role in his battle against aggressive kidney cancer.
Rick led a wonderful and fulfilling life. He will be forever cherished by his wife of 49 years, Susie; his children, Vanessa Sandez and Matthew Martin; his grandchildren, Lucas, Isaiah, and Logan; and his faithful dog, Morro.
A visitation for Rick will be held Monday, January 15, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Oakdale Mortuary, 1401 South Grand Ave, Glendora, CA 91740. A funeral service will occur Monday, January 15, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, 1401 South Grand Ave, Glendora, CA 91740. A burial to follow will occur.
