Iris Trudy Brickman, a beacon of resilience and love, passed away peacefully on November 8th, 2023, at the age of 72 in Portland, Oregon. Born to Irving and Muriel Levine in Queens, New York, and sister to Sandra, Iris's life was a testament to the adage “where there is a will, there is a way.”
At the tender age of five, Iris faced a life-altering car accident that left her paralyzed. However, she never let her physical limitations define her. Iris was a pioneer in accessibility and inclusion, fiercely advocating for her right to a regular education. She excelled academically and socially, earning a master's degree in psychology from Hofstra University. Her tenacity led her to a fulfilling career in psychoanalysis in New York.
Iris's spirit of adventure led her to scuba diving, where she met her husband, Larry. Their romance was nothing short of a fairy tale, culminating in an underwater proposal and marriage in September 1986. Iris's indomitable spirit was recognized when she received the prestigious Abraham & Straus "Spirited Woman" Award. This honor highlighted Iris's life of remarkable independence and vitality, despite unthinkable challenges. Ever the Spirited Woman, she embodied the ethos of the award, proving that the human spirit's strength is the true measure of success.
The couple welcomed their daughter in January 1988, and Iris devoted herself wholeheartedly to motherhood, often referring to it as “her greatest love story.”
Throughout her life, Iris battled and overcame numerous challenges, including breast cancer and many other severe health issues. Her resilience in the face of adversity was inspiring. Iris's move from California to Oregon in March of 2021 with Larry, her daughter Ilyssa, son-in-law Kelly, marked a new chapter of love and family bonding. Soon after moving, the family welcomed her cherished granddaughter Sloane, with whom she shared a deep relationship filled with compassion. Her final years and days were filled with love, laughter, family dinners while watching Jeopardy, and countless Gilmore Girls reruns.
Iris was more than just a survivor; she was a powerhouse of determination, kindness, and enduring love. Her life was a luminous journey, and the ultimate example of resiliency. Iris will be lovingly remembered and profoundly missed. "I love you forever, I'll like you for always, forever and ever, my Mommy you'll be."
Iris is survived by her sister Sandy, husband Larry, daughter Ilyssa, son-in-law Kelly, and granddaughter Sloane. Her indomitable spirit, love, and legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
A memorial service for Iris will be held Friday, November 17, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Werst & LaBella Funeral Home, 71-41 Cooper Ave, Glendale, NY 11385.
