Robert Dale Maxwell, Jr. was born on June 22, 1945 in Seattle, Washington to Robert, Sr. and Betty Jean Maxwell. Bob was the oldest of five (5) children – Vern Arthur Maxwell, Linda Noreen Maxwell, Catherine Lynn (Maxwell) Langston, and Michael Shannon Maxwell. Bob’s father was a member of the U.S. Navy so the family moved wherever the military took them. In 1964, Bob graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego, California. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps after high school graduation.
Bob met Kathleen (Kathy) Louise Uren at the Pink Poodle Ice Cream Parlor on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, when he was stationed at Kaneohe Bay MCAS on Oahu and she was taking summer courses at the University of Hawaii. They were married on October 22, 1967, in Pasadena, California. Bob and Kathy moved to Arizona in 1969 so Bob could attend Arizona State University. He graduated from ASU in 1975 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture. They moved to Glendale, Arizona in 1971 and became members of Glendale Christian Church in 1981, where Bob served the Lord faithfully in the areas of facilities, security and multi-media. They were blessed three children – Stacy Allison (Maxwell) Bethea, Jonathan Robert (J.R.) Maxwell, and Jaime Lynn (Maxwell) Dickman – and six grandchildren – Ashley Bethea (17), Reagan Bethea (5), Kole Dickman (5), Morgan Bethea (3), Kaden Dickman (3), and Ruby Jo Maxwell (2).
Bob was employed by the U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, as a transportation planner for 40 years. He worked with various tribes throughout Arizona, Nevada and Utah. Bob enjoyed scouting and served as Scoutmaster of Troop #622, Boy Scouts of America, Thunderbird District. During his more than 25 years as Scoutmaster, Bob taught and mentored numerous young men through the years and helped many earn the title “Eagle Scout,” including his son, J.R.
He will be remembered by all who knew and loved him as a loving husband, brother, father, uncle, and grandfather. Bob loved the Marine Corps and enjoyed watching Elvis movies and listening to the “All Elvis, All the Time” radio station. He was a generous and caring person who sponsored three children through Compassion International and Children’s International. Bob had a servant’s heart and was always willing to help where needed.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brother Michael, and wife Kathy. He is survived by his siblings and their spouses: Vern and his wife Jan, Cathy and her husband Alan, and Linda; three children and their spouses: Stacy, J.R. and his wife Sarah, and Jaime and her husband Keith; six adoring grandchildren – Ashley, Reagan, Kole, Morgan, Kaden and Ruby Jo; and, numerous other family members.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at Glendale Christian Church, 9661 N. 59th Ave., Glendale, AZ 85302. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bob’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project, Compassion International, Children’s International or another charity of your choice.
