Mariaelena (Molly) Martinez Carrillo, beloved Mom, Nana, and Tia, gained her angel wings on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, after a courageous battle with liver disease. Surrounded by her loving family at Boswell Hospital, she passed away at the age of 70.
Born on May 19, 1954, in Phoenix, Arizona, Mariaelena was the cherished daughter of Pablo A. Martinez and Cresencia E. Martinez. Growing up as the only girl among four older brothers, she developed a strong will and a fighting spirit that defined her life.
After graduating from Peoria High School in 1972, where she learned to play the flute and participated in the marching band, Mariaelena married Carlos Moya Carrillo on March 29, 1975. They welcomed their first child, Christopher, in 1976, followed by Christina in 1978. As a dedicated mother, she worked multiple waitressing jobs to provide for her children, instilling in them a strong work ethic that they carry with them to this day.
Mariaelena pursued further education at Rio Salado Community College and found a rewarding career with Chicanos Por La Causa. Ultimately dedicating 22 years to the Arizona Department of Health Services before retiring in April 2021.
A genuinely loving and generous person, Mariaelena had an infectious smile and a zest for life. Her faith was central to her being, and she found joy in learning about her family history and celebrating everyone's birthdays. She loved playing the slots at the casino, embarking on road trips with her nieces, and enjoying family dinners at Manuel’s Mexican Restaurant, and often had a craving for a hot cup of McDonald's coffee at any time of day.
Mariaelena cherished her time spent playing card games with her grandchildren—George, Julia, and Cristal Reyes—and her family, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and love.
She is now reunited in heaven with her beloved brothers Guadalupe, Casimiro, and Louie. She is survived by her brothers Paul and Manuel Martinez, her children Christopher and Christina, and her three adored grandchildren.
Mariaelena's warmth, strength, and unwavering love will forever be missed, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
