Joyce was born at Herman Hospital School of Nursing in Houston, TX in 1938, to Roy and Bessie (Stewart) Barak. Her father was a Master Builder and her mother, was a homemaker devoting her life to the kids and family. After high school, Joyce enrolled in the nursing program and that very same school of nursing. While there as a student, she met her husband, Dave, who was a medical student at Baylor College of Medicine. They were married in 1959. Joyce graduated as a registered nurse in 1960 and worked at Methodist Hospital in Houston assisting with heart catheterizations while her husband finished medical school. Dave enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and they were stationed in Tripoli, Libya for three years. On returning to the U.S. in 1968, Dave entered an OB-GYN residency in Phoenix and, following in her mother’s footsteps, Joyce devoted herself to taking care of their four growing children, two girls and two boys. Somehow, she even managed to fit in multiple hours of volunteer work.
Joyce’s volunteer work was completed in over 20 different organizations under various titles and positions, most notably as President of the Arizona Medical Association Alliance in 1980-1981, and President of the Maricopa County Medical Society Alliance in 1986-1987. And if she hadn’t given enough of herself to her family and community, Joyce had been a frequent blood donor for over 25 years, having donated more than 75 times in her life.
Joyce and Dave traveled frequently covering most of the United States and over 25 countries abroad. Throughout the remainder of her life, Joyce stayed very busy with her volunteer work and eight grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dave Newman; daughter, Tania along with her spouse, Rudy; daughter, Tamara; sons, Troy and Toby, their spouses, Dawna and Kim; and eight grandchildren, Katie, Finn, Maya, Cole, Barek, Beisha, Olivia and Gabriella.
