It is with broken hearts and sadness that we announce the death of our dear sister. Born and raised in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Oliver and Melvie Barrett. During her early years she worked at Phalen’s Bakery then moved onto working at Clover Leaf Produce until her retirement.
Shirley’s greatest love was her family. She was a kind gentle lady who loved everyone. She enjoyed cooking, baking and doing her yard work. Shirley loved dancing and going to bingo and also travelling with her friends.
Shirley is survived by her seven sisters and three brothers. Olive Smith, (James), Reserve Mines, Yvonne Petite, Glace Bay, Emily Hawco, Glace Bay, Eunice Thomas (Steve), London, England, Sylvia Barrett, Homeville,, Mary MacDonald, (Gordie), Glace Bay, Debbie Quito, Toronto, brothers, Harry Barrett, Sask., Silby Barrett (Sharon), Glace Bay, Jimmie Barrett, Windsor, Ont. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews including special niece, Jennifer (MacDonald) Cotton and brother in law, Billy Cooper.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Charlie Cooper, Sydney.
Visitation for Shirley will be held at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay on Friday, October 7,2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held in Newsome United Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, with reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Grand Lake Road, Sydney.
