Herbert Stevens

It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of our DAD, Herbert Walter Stevens on September 30,2019 at the age of 88. Herb would have been 89 on October 5!

Dad was born in Glace Bay and grew up on King Edward St with 4 brothers and 4 sisters. He was the proud son of the late Lucy (Budgell) and Alex Stevens.

He worked on S.N Railway as a brakeman for 19 years. He loved to tell railroad stories. It was one of his many jobs. Dad went to university as a mature student and graduated from Dalhousie in 1975 with a Masters of Social work. This was a dramatic, fulfilling time in his life. He was honored to have the opportunity to support DEVCO employees and their families in his new rule.

He is survived by his daughter Linda (Kevin) Mugford and Dorothy Stevens; siblings Hilda, Toronto, Bob, N.B., Dorothy (Bud) Halifax and his grandchildren Tyler(Kelly)Parkcity, Utah, Kurtis (Ashley) Prince Albert, Kayla (Travis) Melbourne, Aust., Cameron (Prince Albert), Tracey (Halifax) and Chirstopher (Fort McMurray) and his great Grandchildren Parker, Sawyer, Cooper and Nolan.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Kaye (McNeil) Stevens; sisters Peg and Rita and brothers Wilf, Clarence, Jack and Stanley.

Visitation will be held on Monday October 7,2019 from 6pm-8pm at Patten Funeral Home, with a Celebration of life from 7-730pm. Online condolences can be sent to www.pattenfuneral.com.

Thank you to the VON, Home Care and funeral arrangements made by Patten Funeral Home. The VON and Home Care employees became Dad’s friends. They listened to his stories and told him stories. They provided so much more than their duties required. Thank You!. Thank you to the staff on 3rd East who treated Dad with compassion and friendliness. Also Dr. J MacLean, thank you for your wonderful care of Dad until his last days.

Dad loved life. He loved Mom (Kaye), his two daughters and their families and everyone else that was fortunate enough to meet him. Dad had the magical ability to see the positives of people and daily situations. Dad always talked so fondly of his upbringing, his parents and siblings, his work life and his family and friends. Oh yes Dad could talk!. He loved to tell stories but he was also a great listener. Dad probed others to tell their story and he would listen with sincerity and joy.

In Dad’s later years he battled diabetes and overall failing health. Dad always remained as positive as possible and was quoted as saying “growing old is not for whimps!”. Dad will be dearly missed by those that he is leaving behind but he leaves us all with his influencing characteristics of focusing on staying positive to enjoying each day and each other.
