Stanley joined the the United States Air Force in 1951 and served his country for 20 years. He fought in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his service, he was presented with the Air Force Commendation Medal at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He retired in 1971 with the rank of Technical Sergeant. He served as Crew Chief for Air Force One at Bergstrom Air Force Base during Lyndon B. Johnson's Presidency. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for Westinghouse as a Millwright. Stanley could fix any equipment issue that presented itself. He had a talent for not only solving mechanical problems, but also finding ways to improve the machine’s original design. In 1986 Stan and Louise began their dream adventure of building their ranch home in Florence, Texas. On this land they raised cows and goats. Stanley was also a man who valued education. After retiring from the military, he went back to school and graduated with his Associate's Degree. Stanley E. Cox was a strong, inquisitive, determined and steady man.
He is survived by his two children, Mitchell B. Cox and Christina M. Huebner. Mitchell and his wife, Kris, have two children, Jessica Cox and Cody Cox. Christina has two sons, Michael Thompson and Shawn Thompson. Shawn's son is Brandon and Michael's children are Alexa and Jackson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Stanley loved them all very much.
Mitchell and Kris were caregivers for Stanley and are greatly saddened by his passing. Kris will never forget Stan telling her "It will be okay,” when she was fussing over him the day before he passed. Stanley loved his family very much. As a child Mitchell hunted for deer with his father. Stanley showed him how to shoot, track animals, and use the resources around him to survive. As an adult, Mitchell would often fly down to Texas to drive Stanley up to Washington, so the two of them could spend time fishing together. One of Kris’ favorite memories of Stanley is the time she and Mitchell walked the ranch with Stan and found an intact petrified sea shell. Stanley told them “Yep, this was once a sea bed.” Stanley had a great deal of knowledge related to the history of Texas and the community where he lived. Christina also has many loving memories of her father. She felt very fortunate to live close to his ranch. She visited her dad often, having lunch or dinner with him at Wesleyan Nursing Home. All of Stanley's grandchildren will also greatly miss their grandfather. Jessica cherishes the memories of solving puzzles with her grandfather, and having long conversations with him while they sat on the back-porch. Cody spent many days helping his grandfather on the ranch. Both Michael and Shawn spent many years visiting their grandfather and enjoying their time together.
Stanley is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Louise Evelyn Cox; and William Cox, Roland Cox, Ruby Barrett, Betty Winchell, and Ruth Barrett.
The visitation and viewing will be Sunday, February 24, 2019 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home at 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas. The service to honor Stanley’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 10:30 am at the funeral home chapel. The service will then proceed to the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas, where he will be laid to rest with military honors. A celebration of life will follow at Stan’s home.
