James "Jimmy" Hugh Cox III

James Hugh Cox, III (Jimmy), left his earthly home on October 13, 2017. Jimmy’s life was an inspiration to most everyone who met and knew him. Born with Down syndrome, Jimmy did not let the extra chromosome define who he was. He was well accomplished in life skills, had a wonderful sensitivity to others, a true sense of self-worth and a loving, sweet heart. Never bound by limitations, Jimmy, early on, helped to change society’s perception of “special needs” people and their abilities to become vital members of humanity.

Jimmy was born to Phyllis and Jim Cox on October 21, 1962, in Abilene, Texas. As a boy and young man, he was active in school functions and participated in Special Olympics’ events (once carrying the Olympic Torch). In his elementary school years in Duncanville, Texas, he was under the tutelage of Debbie Ray Wilkes who helped to guide the man he became. He was a complete joy and a source of continuing pride to his parents and his sisters, Camie and Julie.

After Jimmy graduated from Duncanville High School, he made the decision that it was time to move away from home. Jimmy lived most of his later years as a resident of Rock House of Georgetown. For many years he worked two jobs, Rock House DayHab and the “real job’ he loved best, at Southwestern University in Georgetown. He achieved special recognition for his twenty years of service at Southwestern.

Jimmy is survived by his parents, Phyllis and Jim Cox; sisters, Camie Cox Evans and Julie Cox Trevillion; his brothers-in-law, Dwight Evans and Will Trevillion; nieces, Kylie Trevillion and Rebekah Evans Ross and her husband, Bailey Ross; nephews, A. J. Evans and Wesley Trevillion; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his grandparents, Dr. Ruth Y. Ackers, J. H. Cox, and Norma Jo Cox.

A memorial service to celebrate Jimmy’s life will be held in the Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home Chapel on October 21, 2017 at 10:00 am with a reception following the service.
