George Maurice Fox, 90, of Jarrell, passed away at the Georgetown Hospital on April 14, 2014. He was born August 2, 1923 to Joseph and Flora Fox and grew up in Houston, Texas.
Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, George enlisted in the US Navy. He loved to tell his family about his experiences in the Pacific Theatre on the destroyer USS Fanning. On one occasion, the Fanning was attempting to rescue a downed fighter pilot from the sea. The captain asked for a volunteer to go into the water to attach a line to the flyer. George dove in and secured the pilot.
Shortly after the war, he met his wife Mary Ruth Grider Fox. Their wartime romance resulted in 66 years of marriage. They lived and raised their children for many years in Spring Branch, Texas. George worked in office automation sales and in later years he learned the craft of upholstery and started his own business. He loved the music of the 1940's and is remembered as an enthusiastic dancer to those tunes. Tinkering and inventive ideas were a pleasure to him, and he taught many a lesson to his children and grandchildren on using tools and making repairs.
George is survived by his wife, Mary; their children, Stephen Fox and wife Susan of Dolores, Colorado, Joel Fox of Jarrell, Texas, Mary Georgeann Bodnar and husband Dave of San Antonio, Texas and Tom Fox and wife Anna of Jarrell, Texas. He is also survived by his brother, John Fox of Atlanta, TX; grandchildren, Chris Lane, Aurelia Hidalgo, Victoria Fox-Behrle, Sarah Jane , Jason Bodnar, Jared Bodnar, Jessica Ochs, and Brandi Johnson; and 8 great-grandchildren.
