January 8, 1937 - July 24, 2024
Dorothy Fisher Smith, affectionately known as "Dot," passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024, at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, Gerald Wayne Smith, who passed on July 21, 2018, her older sister, Virginia Crumby, and her parents, Kenneth and Thelma Fisher.
Dot was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, known for her warm heart, generosity, and unwavering faith. She leaves behind her two grown children, Tammy Sargent (Darrell) of Georgetown, TX, and Randy Sanders (Denise) of Mont Belvieu, TX. She was also a cherished "bonus" mom to Mark Smith (Donna) of Wichita, KS, Teri Hall (Kent) of Charleston, WV, and Tim Smith (Diana) of Ventura, CA. Dot's legacy continues through her grandchildren, Jennifer, Ryan, Billy, Grant, Grayson, Shelby, Kaycie, Millicent, Daniel, Casey, and Caleb, as well as her nine great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly and kept in touch with over the years. Dot is also survived by her oldest sister, Billie Frances Walker, 93, who is living in Midlothian, VA.
Dot's life was marked by her dedication to service and her love for family and friends. She worked for the Defense Department and the Immigration and Naturalization offices of the federal government for 35 years, retiring to spend more time with her beloved grandchildren and children. She was an active member of the Jaycees, devoting countless hours to service projects in the Memphis area. Dot's love for dancing led her to the Memphis Bop Club, where she not only enjoyed many Friday nights dancing but also taught others to "bop." Her passion for dancing brought her many lifelong friends.
Dot was an exceptional cook, and her Christmas fudge was a much-anticipated treat for those fortunate enough to be "on the list." She was always the first to offer help to those in need, embodying the spirit of kindness and generosity. As a devoted Christian, Dot was a shining example to her children and all who knew her.
Dot and Gerald shared a beautiful life together, filled with travel, dancing, and cherished moments with friends and family. Their love and companionship were evident to all who knew them.
A graveside service celebrating Dot's life will be held at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 Germantown Pkwy on August 4, 2024 at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Dot's memory.
Dot's spirit, love, and kindness will be deeply missed but never forgotten by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
