Alan Bruce Cottrill was born January 22, 1937 in Parkersburg, WV. He was the son of the late Francis Cottrill and Myrtle King. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie Cottrill, son Andrew Cottrill and his wife Jana Cottrill and daughter Amy Cottrill Marsh and her husband Brandon Marsh. He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren: Mackenzie Cottrill, Bowen Cottrill and Avery Marsh. He passed away at age 86 on September 24, 2023.
Growing up relatively poor at the end of the Great Depression in West Virginia had an impact on Bruce’s life. He graduated from Parkersburg High School, then went on to get a degree in Chemistry from Marietta College in Ohio. Not having the money for a car, he hitchhiked the 15 miles to school every day. After graduation, he took a job with HJ Heinz as a chemist in Pittsburgh, PA, where he eventually met Marjorie Ann Lockhart. After marrying, he took a job with Xerox in Rochester, NY, where he spent the better part of 30 years. At Xerox, he completed two Master’s degrees and transitioned to being a software engineer as a result of one of his degrees. He also earned a patent for technology related to touch screen printing while at Xerox. In 1973, their son Andrew was born, followed four years later by their daughter, Amy. Bruce and Marge spent 20+ years shuttling Amy and Andy to swim meets all over the place. After retiring in 1999, Bruce and Marge moved to Sun City in Georgetown, TX to be closer to family (and escape the winters in NY!).
Bruce, as he was affectionately known by everyone, was an avid tennis player, computer expert and a die hard Steelers fan. If you needed your computer fixed in Sun City, he was there to help. He also enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golf, and fixing anything and everything. He had a workshop in the basement in NY and you could occasionally hear him yell out an inappropriate word or two when something went awry. He also enjoyed telling (and retelling) good jokes. We will miss him.
A come and go visitation will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm at The Enclave at Round Rock Senior Living, 2351 Oakmont Drive, Round Rock, Texas 78665.
