Osborne Clayton Chewning

A man who served his family and his country… Osborne Clayton Chewning, age, 91 of Iron Station passed away at the Robin Johnson House in Dallas, North Carolina on Thursday, September 21, 2017. Osborne served his country honorably in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a Great husband, dad, granddad and great granddad. He never met a stranger and would make friends very easily. Osborne loved to fish and be around the water. He was an avid and proud gardener where he would share his vegetables with his family and his friends. He would can his vegetables in mason jars and freezer bags then break them out at family get-togethers which he loved to do. He was a family man and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Those left to cherish Osborne’s memories and carry on his legacy is his wife of 71 years: Florence Whitford Chewning; daughter: Diana Boyles of Iron Station, North Carolina; two sons and daughters in law: Randall and Kathy Chewning of Denver, North Carolina, Ronald and Kim Chewning of Hardeeville, South Carolina; six grandchildren: Michelle Chewning Moore and husband Tommy, Eric Chewning and wife Sabrina, Lisa Boyles Stires and Husband J.R., Holly Chewning, Mariah Chewning and Carly Chewning; eleven great grandchildren also survive.

He was the son of the late Carlton Chewning and Mary Tarlton Chewning. He was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and one grandson Jason Boyles.

A Life Well Celebrated Ceremony will be conducted at 3:00 PM, Sunday, September 24, 2017 in the Chapel at Carothers Funeral Home, 2205 Williamsburg Drive, Gastonia, North Carolina with Reverend Robert Baker delivering words of comfort to Osborne’s family and friends.

The family will receive guests from 2:00 PM ~ 3:00 PM prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials be given in Osborne’s memory to the Gaston Hospice, P.O. Box 3984 Gastonia, North Carolina 28054.
