Doris Bynum Hicks, 89, of Gastonia passed away peacefully at home on the evening of Saturday April 15, 2023. Doris was known for her canning and quilting. She canned everything from jellies, bread and butter pickles, chow-chow, okra and soups and salsas. She also handmade “yo-yo” quilts. All of her children and grandchildren have been gifted with her handmade quilts. Doris loved to share her canning. Even when she did occasionally sell some of her canned goods, she donated the money to feed hungry children. She was a member of Emanuel Free Will Baptist Church in Dallas. If you visited her, you did not leave hungry. She will be dearly missed.
Doris is the daughter of the late May (Moore) Dixon and Charlie Dixon. Her husband of 42 years, James Ray Bynum, Sr. and her second husband of 17 years, Carroll Hicks both preceded her in death. She is the last of her siblings.
Doris leaves behind her son, James Ray Bynum, Jr. and his wife Robin, daughter Pat (Bynum) Ward and her husband David Glenn Ward and son, Doug Bynum. Her legacy includes six grandchildren, Seth Bynum and his wife Bobbi, Alex Bynum and his wife Jamie, Jeremy Walls and his wife Peyton, Nelson Bynum and his wife Lythia, Kevin Bynum and his wife Tasha and Ashley (Ward) Hutchins and her husband Andrew. Her legacy includes seven great-grandchildren.
