Barbara Rosa Elizabeth (Redding) Whitworth, 87, of Courtland Terrace in Gastonia passed away Sunday June 19, 2022. Barbara was a family oriented woman who especially enjoyed her grandchildren. “Granny” was always willing to babysit her grandchildren and her friend’s children when needed. Barbara loved animals and in particular her pets. He beloved cat, “Ozzy,” will miss her. Barbara enjoyed crocheting baby blankets and her family grieves that they will never again have one of her homemade blankets. Barbara enjoyed Elvis and professional wrestling. Her movies of choice were old time creature movies and disaster movies. She was interested in Native American Lore and Bigfoot and she know some would find him one day. Barbara loved Christmas and she especially enjoyed giving gifts to children. Her family remembers her Red Velvet Pound Cakes that were baked in a 100-year-old pan that had been handed down through the family. Her family says she was the toughest woman they knew. Many are grieving the loss of Barbara.
Barbara is the daughter of the late Bessie Ellen (Hipps) Redding and Deuel Lawrence Redding. Her husband Fred Whitworth, also preceded her in death. One daughter, Frieda Hooker, and a granddaughter, Melissa Humphrey, also predeceased her.
Left to cherish their memories of Barbara and to carry on her legacy are her children; Rachel Humphrey and her husband Dane, “Andy” Lawrence Andrew Whitworth and his wife Amber and Daniel Lee Whitworth and his wife Monica Thomas. Her brother Roy Redding and his wife Janet also are grieving her loss. Missing their grandmother are her grandchildren Greg Humphrey and his wife Katie and Tracy Deputy and her husband Jeff. Her legacy includes four great-grandchildren; Jordan Whitener, Zachary Whitener, Jackson Humphrey and Millie Humphrey, and two great-great-grandchildren; Leland Botts and Eevie Morton as well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service and committal will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday June 23, 2022 in the Dogwood Garden of Gaston Memorial Park, 1200 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia. Reverend Jeff Taylor will officiate and offer words of encouragement and hope to family and friends that gather to remember Barbara.
Barbara’s family extends a heartfelt “Thank You” to staff at Courtland Terrace for taking such good care of “mom” for the last two and a half years.
