Mavis L Smith

Mavis L. Painter Smith, age 91 of Gardendale, Alabama passed away on Monday, May 29, 2023. Mavis was born to the late Mr. Elmer Painter and Mrs. Tressie Young Painter on June 29, 1931 in Paden, Mississippi. She grew up in the Norwood neighborhood of Birmingham and attended Phillips High School. Mavis married the love of her life in November 1952, Mr. Harold L. Smith. They moved as the military directed where they would go, allowing them to adventure in Japan and Germany. In 1968 they settled in Gardendale, Alabama where they raised their family.

Mavis is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Harold L. Smith; her parents, Elmer Painter and Tressie Young Painter; her brothers, Sonny Painter, Paul Painter, and Randall Painter; and her sister, Rita Sue Seals.

She is survived by her three sons; David A. Smith and his wife Judy, Russell H. Smith and his wife Barbara, and H. Keith Smith and his wife Mary; her grandchildren, Amy Smith McCoy(Chris), Leslie Smith, April Birchfield (Jeremy), Thomas Clark (Shea), Robby Clark (Amanda), Melissa Smith Moore (Mitchell), Shelly Smith Chaudhari (Dhaval), Luke Smith (Kasey), and Micah Smith; her special nephews, Terry Painter, Bruce Painter, Troy Painter, and Brett Painter; her niece that was like a daughter, Wendy Painter Stewart; a host of great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 1, 2023 from 12:30 to 2:00 pm at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 2:00 pm with burial to immediately follow at Oakwood Memorial Gardens.
