born August 16, 1909 in Piedmont, Alabama to Pearl Fagan Johnson and John Johnson. The family moved to Pinson when she was two years old and Mrs. Cochran resided in Pinson for most of her life. In 1928 she was employed as a stenographer by the Alabama Power Company. She subsequently became secretary to Walter Hood, Secretary of the Company. Her position working with Mr. Hood allowed her to familiarize herself with all the functions and details of that office. She was so effective in carrying out her work that she was elected in 1945 by the Alabama Power Company’s Board of Directors to be Assistant Secretary of the company. As such, she became the first woman to be an officer of the Alabama Power Company. She was employed by the company for 46 years and retired in 1974. Mrs. Cochran was a proud member of the DAR, General Sumpter Chapter of Birmingham, a member and past president of the Birmingham Genealogical Society and a member of the Pinson United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Cochran; her sisters, Opal J. Perry of Pinson and Frances Van Siclen of Douglasville, Georgia; and her brothers, William Fagan Johnson and Charles Howard Johnson. Mrs. Cochran is survived by her sister, Dorothy Nelms of Pinson; two nephews: Michael E. Perry of Pinson and John L. Perry of Atlanta; a great niece, Suzanne Perry Mueller; two great nephews: John M. Perry and Evan B. Perry; and her beloved friend, Yo Yo. Visitation will be held at Pinson United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 1, 2011 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, with funeral services beginning at noon. Interment will be in Marvin’s Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that gifts be made to Marvin’s Chapel Cemetery or Pinson United Methodist Church.
