Born March 25, 1946, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Bernice Braxton and Rena Iona Hubbert, she graduated from Phillips High School in 1965, where she was an honorary member of KPiO. After school, she worked at Stewart Dredging, where she met her husband. She later worked for City National Bank until the birth of her first child and became a stay-at-home mom, and kept an immaculate house. She was very particular about it, and her appearance, as well as her children's. She returned to work in 1999 as a beloved substitute teacher at Fultondale High School, where her youngest was attending.
She was God-fearing, loyal, a faithful servant, and painfully honest. She was raised Church of Christ, and after marriage, became a faithful member of Fultondale First Baptist Church and attended there for 49 years, since Thanksgiving 1972. She loved her church family, and sang in the choir, and spent lots of time in the kitchen there. She was a G.A. leader, where she loved to help with crafts and rarely showed up without candy for "her girls."
She will be remembered for fiercely loving her family, and nothing made her happier than a house full, visiting, and eating. In earlier years, she especially loved hosting the annual Hubbert Christmas Eve gathering that usually grew to include many friends. She was famous for her peanut brittle, hokey pokeys, and chicken and dumplings.
She raised her girls to be independent and her boy to know it was ok to cry. She expected them in church and let them know her disappointment when they were not. She expected a call every day from each and began to worry when she did not hear from them.
In her later years, when COPD robbed her of her strength and stamina, she could still go and loved to eat out, where she became a regular at many of the local restaurants and met lots of new friends in servers and staff. She loved sitting in the car overlooking the baseball/flag football/soccer fields watching her grandchildren play, lately while holding her newest grandchild.
Her memory will be kept alive by her husband of 53 years, John Michael' Mike' Stewart, children Tara Stewart Hardee (Mark), Todd Stewart (Keely), and Toni Stewart Donaldson (Dillion), grandchildren Emily, Sloan, Jake, Cole, Luke, John Riley, and Caroline, sister JoAnn Hubbert Gann (Scott), nephew Darrell Hubbert, nieces Kim Hubbert Powell (Jeff), and Lori Gann Mayfield (Keith).
We will celebrate her life on Monday, July 26, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, 2029 Decatur Highway, Gardendale, AL. The funeral will be Tuesday, July 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Fultondale First Baptist, 409 Main Street, Fultondale, AL, with graveside immediately following at St. Clair Memorial Gardens, 21271 US 231, Pell City, AL.
